It was mid-afternoon when Wyatt returned from Liverpool. He expected that most of the inhabitants of the house would be taking tea, so he was surprised when Bingo came hurrying into the entrance hall as he was handing Headley his hat and coat.
"There you are," Bingo said, looking relieved. "I was worried you'd be gone all day."
"Why? What's wrong?"
Bingo rubbed the back of his neck and shot Wyatt a guilty look. "There's been an accident."
"What happened?" Wyatt asked, a knot twisting in his stomach. "Is anyone hurt? Is Madge alright? Was it one of the horses?"
"No, no, Madge is fine. It wasn't a riding accident. It was..."
"What? Out with it, man!" A sudden fear that, of all the guests, there was only one who could make Bingo so worried about his reaction made Wyatt speak sharply.
"Miss Kingston was attacked." Bingo spoke the words in a rush.
Wyatt felt as though he'd been punched in the gut. "What happened? How is she? Where is she?"
"She's in her room. The doctor has been and gone. He says she was lucky. It was a glancing blow without much force behind it. She was only briefly unconscious. She has a headache, but he thinks, with rest, she will be perfectly well in a day or so."
"How did it happen?" Wyatt asked again, fighting to calm his panic. She would be fine. No lasting damage done.
Bingo winced. "She was only out of my sight for a minute or two. We'd gone up to the abbey, you see. She said she was looking for something. I can't tell you how awful I felt when I realized she wasn't nearby and I went looking and found her lying there, looking like she wasâ" He broke off and rubbed the back of his neck again. "I've apologized profusely, and she says she doesn't blame me, but I cannot help but blame myself."
Wyatt couldn't help but blame him, either, but he set aside his anger in his quest for more information. "You say she was out of your sight a matter of minutes. If so, you must have seen her attacker."
"I did see something," Bingo said hesitantly. "Of course, I was mostly concerned for Miss Kingston and, what with the rain, I was likely mistaken."
"What did you see?"
Bingo opened his mouth, paused, cleared his throat, then said, "I sawâI think I sawâa ghost."
"You cannot be serious."
"I told you I didn't get a good look," Bingo said defensively. "It was raining, and I only saw her for a second."
"Her?"
"I think it was a her. It looked like a veiled lady."
Wyatt gave him an incredulous look.
"You asked what I saw, and I'm telling you." Bingo sounded annoyed now. "I didn't claim it made sense."
With a sigh, Wyatt said, "Can I see her?"
Bingo looked confused, then understanding dawned. "Miss Kingston? No. They've given her a sedative. But you can talk to her tomorrow, I'm sure."
